Nataraj – the Lord of Dance – is a depiction of the Hindu god Shiva as the Cosmic Dancer.

I had to look up the symbolism behind the different attributes of this bronze statue.

If I’m correct, it is called Anandatandava – the Dance of Bliss – representing the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction, birth and death. His long hair has become loose and knocks over heavenly bodies, destroying them as such. He stands on a demon representing ignorance, while his right hand shows the Abhaya mudra, representing protection from evil and ignorance.

Apparently he originates from Southern India and I decided to go and see if I can find him there 🙂
