Outside the weather is bleak.
Rain keeps coming down.
An endless series of Blustery Days… 😉
It makes me think of hearty food, full of autumn veggies, like pumpkin and mushrooms!
This was a highly unexciting photo when it popped up on my computer – taken at one of the stands of the Mercat de La Boqueria in Barcelona – but a chocolate-and-cream toning in black and white saved the day.
I like how it makes the gills and subtle tan around the edge of the cap stand out.
While roaming the worldwide web, I discovered that these oyster mushrooms have not been common to our diet for that long yet. They were first cultivated in Germany, to provide extra nutrition during World War I.
Nowadays, they are widely cultivated in Kerala, South India, where they are also used in a variety of dishes.
I think that as of now I will just call them chippikkoon – Malayalam for oyster mushroom – as that sounds much cuter! 🙂
