When I was a kid, we used to go this theme park called Efteling.
Every year. Third week of September.
I ab-so-lute-ly loved it there.
I still love it! Which is why I went again yesterday (I’m still a kid at heart sometimes ;))
The whole park is built around fairy tales, without the painfully sugar-sweet coating that Disney pours on top of them. Instead, though aimed at kids, it still breathes some flavour of nostalgic romance and adulthood – probably the only reason it was bearable for my parents!
Over the 60 years of its existence the park has changed quite a lot. However, one thing that has been there since its inception is the Fairy Tale Forest, largely designed by the Dutch artist Anton Pieck.
One of the latest additions is the Fairy Tale Tree, an old, wise oak that tells stories about the adventures of the inhabitants of the park.
It is so life-like I yet have to see a child that is not completely mesmerised by it…
Though this little fella seemed more interested in my camera 🙂
