Jellyfish

© See Love Remember, 2012

I felt like jellyfish…

This specimen was drifting in a tank at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

Since I realised I actually don’t know much about jellyfish – besides the horror of getting stung by one! – I called upon Wikipedia 🙂

Did you know that due to overfishing, which is already bad enough as it is, and the increased nutrient supply by land runoff (think: groundwater flow taking excess fertilisers etc. to open sea) the population of jellyfish can expand rapidly?

Now this might not sound too bad, especially in a world where more and more species are getting extinct.

However, it makes it hard for marine ecosystems and fish stocks to re-establish themselves, as jellyfish feed on plankton, fish eggs and… baby fish…

… but they look so innocent… 😉

*end of lesson*
