SLR – See Love Remember

Of Glass, Steel & Mirrors

© See Love Remember, 2012

One of the reasons I liked the Reichtags Dome so much?: it’s eco-friendly! 🙂

The design results in a significant reduction of the CO2 emissions of the building (CO2 = climate change = bad). The glass panels of the cone direct sunlight into the building and the plenary room below, while at the same time acting as a sunshield to avoid solar glare – all aimed to efficiently use daylight. At the same time, the heating and AC are fueled by rape seed oil.

It is also full of symbolism. The double-helix walk-ways bring visitors over the government, seated in the debating chamber below – people above the government.

I like how such a high-tech dome of glass, steel and mirrors is made part of the original building, with its neoclassical pillars and tympanum. Past and future seamlessly melted together.

All in all, it is a lovely construction and definitely worth a visit if you get a chance 🙂
